Confirmation of Animal Requirements and Vendor Selection<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Before initiating an animal procurement request, users should first confirm the animal requirements <strong>within the scope and limits of the approved Animal Experimental Protocol<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strain<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sex<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Age<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Quantity<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Users are also responsible for identifying a preferred vendor and checking preliminary animal availability. Final confirmation of the vendor may be subject to veterinary review of the animals\u2019 health status.<\/p>\n<p>If assistance is required\u2014such as advice on <strong>genetic characteristics<\/strong>, <strong>health status compatibility<\/strong>, or the suitability of animals for the intended experimental plan\u2014users may request a consultation with LAF for guidance.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Step 2. Biosecurity Review and Import Documentation Submission<\/h2>\n<p>Following preliminary planning, users must submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/apcf-infosite.hkust.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Animal-Importation-Form-23.3.2026-updated.pdf\">Animal Importation Form<\/a>\u00a0together with a minimum of one year of historical health surveillance records and the most recent health report representative of the animals intended for import, to LAF for veterinary biosecurity review.<\/p>\n<p>Once the import is approved by the Attending Veterinarian (AV), users should submit the following additional documents to LAF:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apcf-infosite.hkust.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/LAF-Service-Request-Blank-Form-2025-02-19-1.pdf\">LAF Service Request Form<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Packing list<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on the submitted materials, LAF will determine the appropriate import conditions, which may include <strong>direct import into the SPF barrier<\/strong>, <strong>quarantine with microbiological screening<\/strong>, or <strong>rederivation<\/strong>, as deemed necessary by the AV.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Step 3. Transportation Arrangement<\/h2>\n<p>For animals procured from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jax.org\/\"><strong>The Jackson Laboratory<\/strong><\/a>, LAF may assist in arranging transportation from the vendor to LAF.<\/p>\n<p>For all other sources, researchers are responsible for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arranging shipment with a courier of their choice<\/li>\n<li>Proposing an import date agreed upon by LAF<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Researchers are also responsible for applying for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afcd.gov.hk\/english\/quarantine\/qua_ie\/qua_ie_ipab\/qua_ie_ipab_idc\/files\/AF240_Jul16E.pdf\">Import Permit<\/a><\/strong>, unless the animals are sourced from The Jackson Laboratory<br \/>\n(please refer to the<a href=\"https:\/\/apcf-infosite-dev.hkust.edu.hk\/?page_id=3293\"> <em>Animal Import Permit Application<\/em><\/a> page for details).<\/p>\n<h3>Delivery Requirements<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Animal delivery to HKUST must take place <strong>Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), between 9:30 am and 4:00 pm<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>LAF must be notified promptly once the delivery schedule is confirmed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>On the Day of Import<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The researcher must receive the animals at HKUST and verify that the <strong>strain, quantity, and accompanying documentation<\/strong> are correct<\/li>\n<li>The researcher will then transport the animals to the <strong>LAF checkpoint (L\u2011zone lobby)<\/strong> for handover to LAF personnel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Reminder:<\/strong><br \/>\nDeclarations must be lodged with the Government within <strong>14 days<\/strong> of importation or exportation of goods.<br \/>\nThe declaration e\u2011form is available via the <strong>PURO system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>LAF tip:<\/em> For mice, use <strong>HS Code \u201c1061900\u201d<\/strong> and Goods Description <strong>\u201cLive mice\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Step 4. Animal Arrival Health Check and Quarantine<\/h2>\n<p>Upon arrival, the animals\u2019 condition will be assessed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If <strong>quarantine is not required<\/strong>, animals will be transferred into the SPF animal holding barrier by designated LAF staff.<\/li>\n<li>If <strong>quarantine is required<\/strong>, animals will be cared for and monitored by the LAF veterinary team. Microbiological screening will be conducted during quarantine to confirm health status prior to relocation to the SPF barrier.<\/li>\n<li>If <strong>rederivation is required<\/strong>, LAF can provide assistance with the rederivation process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Step 1.
