The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is an internationally recognized institution that takes its responsibilities for the humane care and use of animals very seriously. The Laboratory Animal Facility (LAF) operates under the oversight of the University’s Animal Ethics Committee (AEC), which is responsible for the governance, development, and continual review of the Institution’s animal care and use program.
The program is developed in accordance with best practices and the standards outlined in:
- Hong Kong’s Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Experimental Purposes (2004), published by the Animal Welfare Advisory Group of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department; and
- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 8th Edition (2011).
LAF’s role is to implement and comply with all requirements established by the AEC , as well as applicable local regulations and institutional policies. The facility ensures that day‑to‑day operations, veterinary care, husbandry, and research support are carried out in full accordance with the standards set forth by the institution and relevant regulatory authorities.
